Good, considering this resolved from Octave's end.

Those commands fixed the problem. I guess I'll see if a can find anything more to tie it down to the debian atlas package and submit a report with that project. Thanks!

I have the same system and set of packages and it works for me.

Can you run the following commands in a root shell:

and start up Octave again and repeat the same test? Does it work now?

If it works, then it's probably a bug in the Debian atlas package and not anything that can be changed in Octave. Possibly this bug:

I used the Debian synaptic package manager to download the precompiled linux binaries. I usually run it from a launcher which just closes the terminal its opened in without any messaging but I tried running it directly from a bash shell which causes octave to exit with an error message:
"""
octave:1> inv(hilb(100))
panic: Illegal instruction -- stopping myself...
Illegal instruction
"""
libatlas3-base = 3.8.4-9
libblas3 = 1.2.20110419-5
Im running the debian wheezy (testing distribution) and both of those packages came from the testing repositories.

How did you obtain Octave? What exactly do you see when Octave crashes? With versions of ATLAS and BLAS are you using?

Running a command like:
inv(hilb(100))
causes octave to crash. The command seems to execute without causing a crash more often for smaller smaller n in hilb(n).
