Library building using implicit rules appears to be broken in version 3.82. The attached makefile works with version 3.81, but not 3.82. This is the case both on Ubuntu Linux version 10.04.4 LTS and Solaris 5.11. In both cases the make was built from source using ./configure;make
To run the test with the attached makefile use:

touch a.c b.c; make
