Yes, it's justified. The build succeeds and produces working
binaries, that's the most important point.

I know that it's justified, because I know that the factors that
make the build slow, and if they were done differently, things
would be worse than they are now.

ARM is not exactly a fast CPU. If you want speed,
- use a modern Intel x86 CPU,
- pass the option --disable-shared to configure,
- pass the option CFLAGS=-O0 to configure, to disable GCC optimization and debugging symbols.

Your tone is impolite and rude, and you attempted to make a
judgement without even attempting to understand what the gettext
package is. You didn't even get the package name spelled correctly.

Such a tone is not welcome in GNU bug trackers and mailing lists.

2012.06.28 15:32:09 building gettext (/src/build/build_gettext.sh) -> /src/logs/build_gettext.log
2012.06.28 16:58:00 building glib (/src/build/build_glib.sh) -> /src/logs/build_glib.log

do you think it's justified that building gettext on an ARM Cortex A8 800 Mhz takes 90 minutes (3 times as long as GCC 4.2.4) ?

i don't.

please hire a gsoc student to rewrite it in less than 2000 lines of C code, which should be well possible given what gettext' job is:

it looks up a string key in a key-value store based on the locale setting.
