The curiosity of Win 7 styled font menus showing FreeSerif in italics (maybe bold italics) is similar.

It's very picky that the value of the OS/2 weight should match the general weight (the connection wasn't clear to me at all), and perhaps also that all of them for bold and italic in the same face are the same. For FreeSerif, they are now all "Book".

I wonder what the exact logic is (not having tried all possible combinations, it's hard for me to say.) And what would the rationale be?

(Also had to re-start Windows after re-installing the font. I guess the system keeps a separate cache for the menus.)

Confirmed. If the OS/2 Weight isn't set to 400 Book, Windows shows the "Style" as "Medium", not "Regular".

BUT

1) This is insane. The docs don't say anything like that.

2) Why did I change it in the first place?
Confused Panose weight (for which there's a formula)
with the OS/2:usWeightClass (for which I find no explanation)
but in view of the OS/2:usWidthClass, it may be meant as a
weight relative to the weight of the normal font.

3) You're again amazing Emmanuel. Somebody should pay you for this stuff (a lot). But I don't have the cash, and life isn't fair.

4) Why did I not see it? I assure you, not for lack of trying. I think my brain doesn't deal well with "unreasonable" behavior. That would explain a lot of things.

I found it! By using Beyond Compare on the FreeSans.sfd and FreeSerif.sfd, I found that FreeSerif has a TTF Weight of 500 whereas FreeSans has 400. After changing to 400, regenerating the font and reinstalling it (by drag and drop to Fonts folder, and accepting to overwrite), it now works normally.

Testing environment: Windows 7 SP1, this works with LibreOffice 3.5, Word Starter 2010, BabelMap and BabelPad.

In Windows 7, using WordPad or many other applicaitons, FreeSerif is listed in the fonts menus, but I can't choose the Regular face. Italic, Bold, Bold Italic, yes.
FreeSans does not show this problem; neither does Times New Roman.

Another apparently cosmetic curiousity: the Fonts control panel lists FreeSerif's normal face as
FreeSerif Medium
while it lists that of FreeSans and FreeMono as
FreeSans Regular
FreeMono Regular
That's weird. Medium is the "weight", the "TTF Style" Regular is (as recommended in the standard).

In Vista, using WordPad (the font interfaces is quite different), curiously, the Regular face is listed after the Italic, unlike FreeSans or FreeMono or TimesNewRoman. And choosing the Regular face gives me Italic.
