See also the feature request #34351 which is essentially the same, i.e., that rand[nep] should implement a "class" argument.

I should add that Octave implements the same
Marsaglia algorithm as Matlab and providing
the 'double' option should not be too difficult.
But, of course, random number generators need
careful coding. The Octave rand.cc contains the
code. The original algorithm was in Fortran and
it may be that the Matlab version is still
Fortran. In any case, the implementation of the
'double' option can be done without changing the
behavior of the default 'single' case.

I will look at this more if I can, but if
anyone is familiar with the code they should
just go ahead...

This option causes the rand-based functions to use and return double precision
results. Matlab provides this option.
