I did a quick build on the stable branch, without gnuplot, and using Mike's patch. Everything worked as intended.

I've attached Mike Miller's changeset, which he posted to the maillist.

Muhali, can you test this for us?

Oops, as Jordi pointed out FLTK cannot be
used until off-screen plotting is fixed.

So, for now, just setting --enable-docs=no
if gnuplot is not present, or equivalent
is the right fix.

Since the default backend will eventually be an OpenGL implementation, I think it makes sense to make the change to the build process first. Has it been decided that 3.8.x will use a native backend by default ?

Looking at octave.ps indicates that gnuplot
is used for most if not all plots in the Manual.

Is it time to switch this to FLTK? We
are encouraging users to move to FLTK, so
why not join them?

And, should both be supported? It seems
to me that requiring FLTK for documentation
build would be OK. But, build of documentation
should be turned off if FLTK is not present
rather than crashing (same for gnuplot).

The pipe to gnuplot is opened when a figure is created.

I think the proper fix is for configure to determine if gnuplot is present and turn of making the docs if it is not.

However, I don't know how to do that.

During installation, the command

is executed, with geometryimages.m containing the line

At that point I had no gnuplot installed, so the installation stalled at this point:

To me it seems that

should have exited with error already.
