The big bad bug that has delayed a release for months.
Install the latest FreeFont in Windows 7, by just copy-pasting the files into the Fonts Control Panel. They seem to install OK. But in the new panel, faces in a family are grouped together in folders. And... for the FreeFont Faces, it shows -- all but the bold-oblique face.
Delete the family. Then see the missing face.
(Often it mysteriously says that some app is still using one of the faces. Close all obvious open apps, it still says something is using it. But I think that's something different. Sometimes on re-start, it stops this complaint.)
Tried all sorts of things, twiddling all sorts of settings, tried fixing complaints of MS Volt, etc etc.
I still don't know what is responsible for this problem. If I could just be satisfied that it isn't somehow FreeFont, I would release the thing.
Experiments
===========
Try installing one at a time. It seems to have something to do with the boldoblique.
Tried making a minimal font, first by cutting FreeMono down.
Then tried building a minimal font, using mostly the default FontForge settings. Same results.
So it isn't FreeFont per se.
Tried building with distribution fontforge 20110222, as well as recent Git pulls. No improvement.
Maybe the 2010 release of fontforge is better, but I haven't managed to build it yet.
Yet... other free fonts (such as DejaVu) do not show this problem.
