Agreed. An instance where the menu to be chosen might be clear is with texmacs-input widgets: these have a working contextual menu. Those items should go into th e menu bar.

We should get back to the ancient code in qt_tm_widget_rep::install_main_menu ():

// QMenuBar *dest = new QMenuBar(0);
// tm_mainwindow()->setMenuBar(dest);
QMenuBar *dest = tm_mainwindow()->menuBar();

this will cure the problem. Another reason: main menu depends on the window since different windows in TeXmacs can show buffers in different modes and thus have different active main menu. So the correct thing to do (in any OS) is to make the main menu depend on the window. The problem we had with the custom widgets is actually the correct behavior: windows associated to widgets do not have any relevant main menu. Of course we would like that the main menu does not disappear but then if we have many edit windows open with different main menus and we open a custom widget which does not have its own main menu, it is not well defined which main menu we should privilege to be associated with the custom widget. So for the moment I would put the code back as shown above and do not consider the disappearing main menu for custom widget a bug. If we agree on a default behavior for custom widget we can implement that but without affecting the code snipped above which is actually correct. I will commit a change to this effect.

Confirmed for svn 4975, not 1.0.7.14 (although I'd have to check under Linux/Win)

Actually many things will make it disappear: for instance opening new windows with the new widgets or file dialogs...

As you probably also suspect, I think the reason is the new way the QMenuBar is instantiated, precisely in order to share it among windows under MacOS, as the QT docs indicate one must do.

This goes up in my list.

On a blank document choose Document->Part -> View Preamble, then the main menu disappear. I didn't find any operation which make it reappear again. (to use the menu when it is not showed you can Ctrl-click on the editor window.
