I tried hard to turn an arbitrary piece of Postscript code into a macro which could then be reproduced several times at several positions and sizes. However, I never managed to get this working.

One other possibility would be to create an explicit postscript image by hand using specific existing postscript primitives for doing that. It should be possible to store these images in macros in a similar way as I do for fonts, colors and line widths.

Currently (1.0.7.14) when TeXmacs exports a background pattern (for example those used in slides) to PS it make no attempt to optimize the PS inclusion of the image resulting in very large files (\sim 70 MB for few pages) since each pattern which is repeated many times to cover the page is, each time, converted to EPS and included verbatim in the PS file. Magically a subsequent PDF conversion with ghostscript it is able to reduce the file to a reasonable size (few 100 kb). It seems that GS is able to understand that the same image is used over and over and just define it once. It would be desirable to do directly the same at the level of PS generation. I do not know how to do it.
