This change appears to fix the problem for me so I'm closing this report.

OK, sorry. This is much more fundamental than I thought:

So Octave does not allow use of the 'end' keyword in a variable when it is nested in an uninitialized variable.

If i change the simple function to not use the 'end' keyword then simple(3) works:

It looks like Octave is trying to interpret the 'end' keyword in the context of the x variable rather than varargin.
