works for me. thanks much.

(i'm glad you disabled the regexp search here. makes no sense to me in this context.)

After a bit of consideration, I've installed a fix that disables regexps when looking for cross-references or menu items. Please, give it a try.

Info does its job right. Here's what happens: The node has no lookup string, therefore "(emacs)" is taken as the one to look for. It is handled as a regular expression (by default), so it matches exactly the word Emacs, therefore the cursor is positioned at its beginning. If you switch to literal matching before hitting f RET, you'll see the cursor positioned at the top of the page (because no literal match is found).

I could, of course, force literal matching when looking for xrefs, but I'm not sure if it will always be the right thing to do. Wdyt?

Sergey, here is another trivial thing:

$ info ./xref5.info # attached
f RET # follow link to emacs

observe that point is at the first "E" in "The Emacs Editor". This is an odd location to end up at. It seems like it should be either be the "T" or the newline before the title. (Emacs 23 info puts it on that newline, older Emacs on the "F" of File:, which also seems ok to me.)

If the xref is changed to have a node name, i.e., "Top", the location in emacs.info after following is different. Seems like that shouldn't matter.

here's the texinfo:

\input texinfo
@setfilename xref5.info

@node Top
@xref{,,, emacs, The GNU Emacs Manual}.
@bye

Thanks,
karl
