This is because consecutive moves with the same checker are displayed as one if possible.

In the first three hints of your example for instance, bar/15 is a shorter way to write bar/20 20/15. The fourth is the extreme case, 20/5* instead of the 4 steps : bar/20 20/15 15/10 10/5.

It is more common for double numbers where a checker is often moved twice but can happen with other numbers (a 6-5 opening is displayed 24/13 instead of 24/18 18/13 for instance).

When one of the moves is a hit, this is explicitly shown but still slightly abbreviated, like in the last move of your example : 8/7/4 instead of 8/7 7/4.

This is not specific to gnubg. Moves are usually written this way in books or articles.

See attached files, the first hint gives only 3 moves instead of usual 4. Presumably this happens (not always) for double numbers.
