This seems to be fixed. I tried all 8 positions both inside and outside and they work. This is after jwe's fix to restore legend functionality for FLTK (13961:0fea4cf22f88).

I've pushed a change to add headers to the texinfo table.

Kostas, mentioned the FLTK problem on the "3.6.0 release" thread of the maintainer's mail-list.

I'll add a bug report for that.

Using the code rather than the help legend text,
and using gnuplot legends appear appropriately
for all the tests that I tried. But, the position
"center" referred to in the help is not meant to
be used in the legend command, it is where the use of
"north" puts the legend. This table in the help text is
pretty confusing;

north center top
south center bottom
east right center
........

Should at least have a column heading of something like:

POS position on plot

north center top
south center bottom
east right center
........

So, improving the help text, and fixing fltk
appear to be what is still most needed.

The fix does not seem to have any effect.
On Linux using fltk no legends appear.
Using gnuplot, the legend using "eastoutside"
and "east" and some others work, but others do not.

The help legend text does not match what the
code does.

It appears that more work is needed.

This example

does not work (that is, placing legend text to the right).
