thanks

would the sheet still "block" the window it is attached to?

IIRC the current behavior is a deliberate decision to implement the documented OSX behavior, and is purely due to the run loop mode that the window runs in ... if we run the window in the default run loop mode then the timers will work as normal.

The problem here is the same as in #34789. We set up a timer for the tool tip to display but as all this happens in a modal window the timer never gets a chance to run.

As you suggested there is a common cause here. I will close this bug and when (if?) we fix #34789 this one should fully work as well.

>The decoding of the tool tips was rather easy to fix

thanks, will have a look tomorrow to confirm.

>Shouldn't it get displayed while the mouse hooversover the button?

does gnustep support tooltips? if so, i guess it should ;)

>But this Exception never got displayed because it was raised while a sheet got displayed

i think this is serious (but not urgent). i can't help but think that something about sheets is fundamentally broken on gnustep:
• exceptions result in X11 errors which completely freeze my ubuntu
bug #34789 something as fundamental as performSelector:afterDelay doesn't work when a sheet is active
• sheets seem to freeze everything .... for example i am invoking my sheet from a nspopupbutton. the menu of the nspopupbutton stays open while the sheet is active, which is OK. but if i move the main window while the sheet is still open, it moves, but the nspopupbutton menu does not, looking very weird

i hope all these problems have a single simple and easy to fix cause ;-)

"modal" should mean the user isn't able to interact with other windows, not that half of everything breaks ;-)

This is a rather interesting problem you found here. The decoding of the tool tips was rather easy to fix, that is why I put the issue into the ready for test state. But there are a few aspects that remain open.

- The tool tip is notw set on the button, but wont have any visual result in itself. Shouldn't it get displayed while the mouse hooversover the button?

- When the tool tip was not working GNustep raised an NSException because an NSAttributedString was greated with an nil string. But this Exception never got displayed because it was raised while a sheet got displayed and we display sheets as modal windows.
This behaviour resulted in a very strange X error message.

Somebody will have to look into these two issues later on.

the attached sample doesn't work on gnustep (and crashes on 2nd try) because it seems like gnustep can't decode tooltips from XIB files => [sender toolTip] is nil
