That patch fixes the problem.

I made a version with the patch included available on http://sourceforge.net/projects/pspp4windows/files/2011-11-09/

Can you try the attached patch.

It ought to fix the annoying error message.

I could trace the problem back.

It originated between 2011-09-02 and 2011-10-02. I am not aware that I changed anything at my side so I guess it is in the source of PSPP.

I can confirm these for WindowsXP.

The problem is already present in the versions from August 2011. I don't know when it started.

It looks as if PSPPIRE tries to open the first file of the directory. If this is again a directory you get an error with permission denied.

I am not able at the moment to check if this happens on linux too or if it is a mswindows issue. But I guess it is a generic issue.

Have fun

Renan Levine reported:

PSPP version 0.7.8-g981b76 using an HP Desktop running Windows 7. These problems were not experienced with an older version (0.7.5??). Problems first noticed by Jessie Braden on the PSPP-USERS list (address@hidden).

.sps files do not show PSPP icon and do not run after double-clicking from Windows Finder.

Error message: .62: error: 'J:____\name.sps' is not a system or portal file.

When opening files from PSPPIRE:

1) .sav and .por files are not visible when the default option "Data and Syntax Files" is selected. Syntax (.sps) files are visible and can be opened without problems. Changing the "Data and Syntax Files" option to "All Files" makes .sav and .por files visible and no problems were experienced when opening them.

2) The following error message appears when entering directories with data and syntax files. Permission is not actually denied because all files can be opened by changing to "All Files" option. error: An error occurred while opening `J:\POL242-DATA\Afghani Opinion': Permission denied.

3) Using a "Get file=" command from a syntax window does open a .sps file (when opening failed from Finder) BUT the dataset did not appear in the PSPPire Data Editor.
