Fixed in this changeset (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/5f0bb45e615c). This will be part of the 3.6.0 release scheduled for December 2011.

Correction: In 3.4.3 th doc string does not explain what the return value is, I accidentially looked at an old version and saw that to late

Beside that the doc string should say what the function returns (the current behavior of imagesc seems to be ML compatible).

either the doc string needs to be adjusted or the function needs to be fixed to return what the user expects
