I checked in the following changeset on the default branch:

http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/e652ff4d1522

It fixes the problem for me, so I'm closing this report.

I don't expect that this change will apply cleanly to the stable branch, so you will either have to wait for the 3.6 release, build from the default branch, or try to adapt this change for the stable branch yourself.

Yikes. This is completely easy to duplicate.

Here is a backtrace from an unoptimized debug version of octave which includes line numbers.

Running Octave changeset 13748:3c3b74677fa0 from 'stable' branch on Ubuntu 11.04 x86, this is easily reproduced for me.
