Great, thanks, I pushed it and merged it here:

Sure - sorry, I thought it was a cset

Ed, this patch looks good. Can you rewrite it as an hg cset?

I've posted a patch that fixes this and a ChangeLog; matlab
apparently allows other data types for names than their
docs specify

(file #25613, file #25614)

Mat-Files containing generated with the LabVIEW library
http://lavag.org/topic/10976-a-mat-file-io-library
from so called Cluster data types (structures) can be read by MatLab and get represented as a structure.
works in matlab.
The same file cannot be read by octave:

When first loaded and saved by matlab, then octave is able to read the resulting mat-file.

More Details:
The error appears regardless what data types the labview cluster contains.
The error appears for string arrays, too
It does not appear for single strings, single numeric data, or numeric arrays.

The problem occurs under Linux and Windows at least.
I don't know whether it's really a bug, or if MatLab is more fault tolerant than octave concerning mat-files.
At least it i a kind of incompatibility.

The example files named above are attached.
