This is goofy behavior, but is not an Octave issue. It is specific to gnuplot. I tested with the FLTK toolkit and it doesn't show this issue.

Two workarounds
1) Use FLTK toolkit for plotting
2) scale the axis to be larger than the line segments.

This may be a feature of gnuplot.

When one or both ends of a line segment are not within the region defined by the axis limits (xrange, yrange and zrange) the line is not rendered. After the "axis square" comment the x/y limits are set to [-0.5, 0.5] while the lines are drawn from 0.0 to 1.0.

The lines reappear after rescaling the axis to include the lines.
