I passed along the report to Jonathan Kew and Han The Thanh personally. Whether they will have time to do anything about it, I do not know.

You might check LuaLaTeX, which is much more actively developed these days -- although I recognize that there are other issues with luatex vs. xetex.

Best,
Karl

Hi Johannes,

Just for completeness: did you inform the XeLaTeX people about this?

Regarding your last comment:

LaTeX is a superior typesetting environment, but TrueType/OpenType is a later technology back-ported to it, and still under development (and unfortunately, the standards aren't always as clear as they ought to be).

Nobody has a complete grip on what can be done with TrueType. The major players continue to add features, font makers continue to use those features in unexpected ways. Unfortunately, no Linux apps are stellar performers, font-feature-wise.

On the other hand, 'mark' positioning is an old, general purpose feature, whose interpretation is pretty clear. It should be easy to get it right.

It never came to my mind that Firefox could have a better kerning/positioning system than TeX, but I see those results, too ;)
Seems to be a XeTeX issue. Let's see what result the discussion on XeTeX's bug tracker on this [url=https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=3407734&group_id=194926&atid=951385 issue 3407734] will give.

I reproduced your xelatex problem here.

Attached find an HTML file, which, when viewed with Firefox with my system, seems to result in better-positioned marks, also attached.

I just tested this with the most recent version of XeTeX [Version 3.1415926-2.3-0.9997.5 (Web2C 2011) (format=xelatex 2011.10.14)], it's still the same. I'll cross-post this issue on the XeTeX Bug-Tracker, there are already related issues with Kerning/GPOS.

I noticed that some combining marks aren’t placed “nice” in combination with some consonants in hebrew. Especially this is the case for a “gimel” (05D2) with a “dagesh” (05BC) or a “Yod” (05D9) with a “hiriq” (05B4). Both "points" have to be placed a little bit more left in this example (see attached files).

I'm using XeLaTeX (the log says: "This is XeTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.2-0.9997.4 (Web2C 2010) (format=xelatex 2011.2.26)") for typesetting my documents.

Look at the first hebrew words in the third line of the PDF-File. With the following hebrew phrase, everything is okay. It's just in some special combinations.
