This is by design.

See the section QUOTING and -q in the man page.

Arguments given on the command line of 'parallel' are split at whitespace characters before being supplied to the called command.

The following command (with two spaces between 'a' and 'b'):

$ echo | parallel echo 'a b'

should print 'a b' (with two spaces). Instead it prints 'a b' (with one space).

Arguments filled in from input lines are correctly supplied:

$ echo 'a b' | parallel echo

Prints 'a b' (with two spaces).

I am using GNU parallel 20110822, installed via MacPorts on Mac OS X 10.6.8.

Thanks!
