i agree that reporting bugs is the right thing to do, but i'd be surprised if more than 5% of the people actually did it

> missing (recent) APIs goes ... please report them as change requests

ok

> please reconsider helping with actual software contributions ...

ok, if gnustep works out for my project (getting a binary-only mac os x game running on most linux distributions - there will be some help requests on the mailing list soon) i will take some time to do proper patches for things where i am able to help.

Don't get me wrong ... filing bug reports is welcome ...but personally I regard it as a common courtesy and duty (even for commercial software, but especially for free software) as well as a case of enlightened self interest.
I know there are people out there who don't report bugs, but that doesn't make it ethical, and I hope/expect that most people will act ethically.

As far as reports of missing (recent) APIs goes ... please report them as change requests rather than bugs. That lets people prioritise when scanning the bug management system for some small job to fit in. Yes that means that change requests are treated as lower priority than bugs, but it registers your interest in a particular feature.

Finally (I'm away for a few days and can't converse for a bit), please reconsider helping with actual software contributions ... you may hate the FSF and the coding style, but if you want to have this free software available, it probably makes sense in the long run for you to overcome your distaste and join in making it even better.

> I'm sorry you don't feel like contributing to give something back for using GNUstep,

other open source projects seem to consider spending time to file bugs a form of contributing too.

> I recommend sticking to the OSX 10.4

thanks but i am porting a large codebase from Mac OS X, so sticking is not an option, but i will stop filing bugs about missing APIs now and just file "real" bugs (#34433, #34445 , #34453, #34454)

My mistake ... I'm sorry you don't feel like contributing to give something back for using GNUstep, but that's OK.

If you are just using, I recommend sticking to the OSX 10.4 (or earlier) Cocoa API, which should be pretty complete (though, if you use the runtime directly, we've moved to a large subset of the Objective-C 2.0 runtime API, which is later than 10.4).

thanks for fixing the bug.

sorry i reported these missing API bugs only for your convenience and can't provide full patches anyway:
• i am on a tight schedule
• i have to work around these in my code anyway since i don't want to depend on a possible fixed version released some time in the future
• i don't want to sign a copyright agreement or have anything to do with the FSF
• i can't bring myself to write a single line in this ugly non-proper and inconsistent (!) coding style the gnustep codebase prefers. perhaps obj-c was written like this in the 90s, it certainly isn't now.

I implemented this and the corresponding setter.

Please see a more full patch attached, giving an example of the sort of thing we need for this:

A new method requires interface change in header file as well as implementation in source file.
The header change needs to be bracketed with conditional compilation for OSX version compatibility (autogsdoc reads this to provide availability information in the documentation, and the macro lets people build for a particular version of the API without accidentally using methods from other versions).
The header change needs to include an autogsdoc formatted comment describing what the method does, so we have documentation.
At least some trivial testcase needs to be provided (I did really minimal tests ... more comprehensive ones would of course be preferred).
