I checked in the following changes so clearing by regular expression should work again in the upcoming 3.6.0 release.

This problem was caused when we switched to requiring PCRE for building Octave but failed to notice that in this instance, POSIX regex functions are used with no option for using PCRE functions.

This problem will likely be fixed in 3.6, but not in any future 3.4.x release.

Do you really need the full power of regular expressions when using clear? By default, the clear function uses globbing patterns to match symbol names, so you can still write things like

etc.

Using the same syntax as I did in Octave 3.4.0 (which worked) and variations as well, I tried using the clear function with a regular expression. In 3.4.2 I get:

error: clear: regex not available in this version of Octave

Is this something that was removed from 3.4.2 (if so, why?), or is this a possible installation problem?
