I believe this is a duplicate of bug # 9487, which I've fixed. Please try the next release and if it recurs, add more notes to this bug and we'll reopen and investigate further.

There is a patch there. I haven't looked at this yet but I will fix it before the next release.

I have some rather complicated makefiles (I haven't yet been able to replicate this bug in a smaller makefile) which do not cause problems with earlier versions of make (like 3.75). However, using make/3.80 on these makefiles now results in a core file which belongs to 'make'. I have a build tree for 'make' as well as the core file to facilitate debugging if necessary. I have attached the stack trace.
