This looks like a problem with an Octave Forge package, not a bug
in Octave. The correct place to report this problem is the
Octave Forge mailing list, octave-dev@lists.sourceforge.net.

A copy of this update to the bug report is being sent to that
list so that they are aware of it. Please follow up there.

Sigh...

The symbolic package is unmaintained, and even if it were maintained, it's not a core Octave package, supposedly maintained by a different team than the present one to which you are reporting the bug.

Nobody in Ubuntu, as far as I know, is watching the Octave bug reports, although I take a peek every few months to see what's up. So the Ubuntu bug reports about Octave are mostly a black hole.

So I don't have much consolation for you. Even when the symbolic package does work (the Debian packages do work; no idea why the Ubuntu packages don't work), I find it pretty useless. Octave isn't meant for symbolic computation, and if you really do need it, I think you're better off using GiNaC directly which the package wraps.

I think you're on your own. I'm trying to fix at least one of these problems, namely, that you are reporting the bug to theh "wrong" people (Octave-Forge packages supposedly have their own mailing list and bug reports separate from core Octave).

Hi

I'm actually reinforcing a problem of installation of the symbolic package in octave (ubuntu bug #757525).

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/octave-symbolic/+bug/757525

The point is there is no way to the symbolic package work in ubuntu 11.04 after the installation, either using the installation manager or the command inside octave

pkg install octave-symbolic

Right now I'm using ubuntu 9.2 in a virutal box (windows host) to use the symbolic package.

A solution or work around would be very welcomed

Thanks
