Hi Thomas,

The original choice of widths would have been that of Yours Truly. The second thought was that the thin space ought to be substantially thinner than the normal space, and thicker than the hair space.

I wonder how many people really notice such things. You are the first to write me on the subject.

So you're a typographer...

I suppose you've seen the statements of purpose on the FreeFont home page:
http://www.gnu.org/software/freefont/
The thrust of the fonts is to be adequate for most users, but we can't reasonably hope to compete with professional foundaries.

What are your views on this, as a typographer? You might comment on the mailing list, or write to my gmail account (stevan.white).

Please note: the current FreeFont in CVS is broken: it lost its kerning tables due to an accident, and it will take me some time to fix that.

Cheers!

Wow! I did not expect the problem to be fixed so quickly! Many thanks! And thanks for choosing the sixth of an em, instead of the fifth: this is better for French typography, but I hope this won’t bother typographers from other countries (I don’t know which is the preferred width worldwide).

It was too wide in some faces, zero in one.
Adjusted so it and thin space are 1/6 of an em.

Thanks!

First, sorry for my bad English.

The release date of the freefont package I am using: 2010/09/19

The exact Unicode character code of the character in question: U202F (NARROW NO-BREAK SPACE)

This glyph's width is too big (250, which is actually equal to U00A0 NO-BREAK SPACE's width). The standard glyph's description says for NARROW NO-BREAK SPACE: "a narrow form of a no-break space, typically the width of a thin space or a mid space".

The standard description for U2009 THIN SPACE says: "a fifth of an em (or sometimes a sixth)".

In French typography, it's rather a sixth of an em than a fifth, but nevermind: a width of 200 instead of 250 would be fine.

Thank you for your concern, and congratulations for the beautiful and so rich FreeFont typefaces!
