Thanks for the changes and adding the position output. Sorry I didn't reply. I don't see the matrix vs list behavior now.

"help sscanf" doesn't mention the errmsg output, so it looks like pos is the 3rd output instead of the fourth.

Please give a precise example that can be used to demonstrate the problem of returning a list of values instead of a matrix?

sscanf and fscanf behave differently between matlab and octave: octave returns a list of values whereas matlab returns a matrix. In addition, sscanf in octave does not return a nextindex to indicate where the current readpoint is in the string.
