Thank you for the bug report.

I have been doing some work on imread and Octave is now able to read the attached image (100x100 matrix) as well as its colormap (16x3). Some testing with the development version, specially for confirmation against matlab would be most welcome ;)

I can confirm this error on Debian with the development version of Octave. The attached file opens with Gimp and others so I assume it's a valid GIF format. Octave opens it with one output argument, but not two.

The error has nothing to do with the additional arguments, none of which are listed in the help for imread.

GraphicsMagick returns the following for the attached file: classType is PseudoClass, colorMapSize is 16, computed depth is 2, and image type is GrayscaleType. Magick::GrayscaleType is indeed not in the case statement in read_indexed_images.

On my FC15, I have the latest RPMs: 6:octave-3.4.0-6.fc15.x86_64 and GraphicsMagick-1.3.12-4.fc15.x86_64

GraphicsMagick-1.3.12 is the latest available version on the developer web site.

I confirm the error with the file attached:

[M map]=imread('synthgif01.gif','frames','all');
error: imread: invalid image file: _magick_read_: unsupported indexed image type
error: called from:
error: /usr/share/octave/3.4.0/m/image/imread.m at line 74, column 7

(file #23714)

I can't reproduce this bug in my GNU/Linux dev build. I think it's a peculiarity of the Windows build. Can you try a more recent build? I think other people have reported problems with Marco's Cygwin build.

Same answer for any other volunteer-drive project: when it's ready, sooner if you help. If it's easier for you to state that your package doesn't work with Octave than to help us fix Octave, go ahead.

How long might it take to get a response and/or fix on this bug report? If it is not addressed promptly we may have to drop octave support for the image segmentation package found here:

Sorry, the file didn't upload. I forgot to check its size. Any gif should reproduce the error though.

in Cygwin 1.7.9 (a recent fresh install including Octave-3.4.0 and GraphicMagick-1.3.12)

Using the attached file, or any other gif in a call to imread of the form:

#verbatim#
[M map]=imread('Muybridge_race_horse_animated.gif','frames','all');
-verbatim-

in Octave results in the following error message:

#verbatim#
error: imread: invalid image file: _magick_read_: unsupported indexed image type
error: called from:
error: /usr/share/octave/3.4.0/m/image/imread.m at line 74, column 7
-verbatim-

No such problem occurs in MATLAB, and the 256 X 3 colormap is returned.
