convhulln has been recoded to allow for the return of non-simplicial facets (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/7ff0bdc3dc4c). To access the change you will need to build from development sources or wait for the 3.6 release scheduled for December 2011.

I see that there was a change made back in 2002 to make the default behavior of convhulln generate simplicial facets, and to test that the results returned by convhulln were simplicial. I have no issue with this as a default behavior.

However, the error checking is done even when the user supplies their own arguments to qhull. There are a lot of legitimate uses where a minimal set of vertices is desired, not a minimal simplicial set, and the errors that get thrown prevent convhulln from serving these cases.

My suggestion would be that the error checks be done only if the user does not supply their own arguments to qhull.
