with my installation experience, this is only an issue if GRUB writes to an XFS partition and not MBR. GRUB seems to work fine on an XFS /boot partition as long as it can write to the boot sector of the ie mbr. the problem comes in (with my installation) when i want to chain load GRUB from another boot loader (XOSL), and attempt to install GRUB on the boot sector of the XFS /boot partition. because of the issue (which the XFS team really need to address), an alternative FS is always used (ext3 generally) for our installations.

It is becaues of XFS but not of GRUB. XFS uses the boot sector of a partition for its own purpose, which is quite incompatible with the traditional way in PC. This report should be sent to XFS developers instead.

This is not a bug, XFS does not support partition bootloaders.

I used the 'install' command to install stage1 in the boot sector of the partition. Installation in the MBR makes no sense because it's the 2nd SCSI disk. The MBR of hd0 holds the Windows NT bootloader.

I tried to install GRUB in an XFS partition. After the installation Linux does no longer recognize this partition and GRUB also doesn't know the partition type.

SuSE Linux 8.1 (Kernel 2.4.19).
