The reason that PSPPIRE opens an empty output window on startup is that psppire.c's "initialize" function does, as its last step, the following:

and running any syntax (even empty syntax) causes that syntax to be written to the output window as a side effect.

John, you introduced that call (in slightly different form) without further explanation in commit fe76b9c2c "Rewrote the command line parser using argp." Removing it seems to have no ill effects. Do you know of a reason to keep it?
