As this appears to have been fixed in the sources, I'm closing it.

It can be reopened if necessary.

Thanks for pointing out that I don't have to recompile. The .m file is in my ~/share/octave/m/plot directory. This doesn't need compiling of course...!

I have changed 'obj' into 'hlgnd' near line 1472 and that indeed resolved the problem. Thanks again!

The extract was not fresh, but I thought I should work anyway.

The recompile was never necessary, so this is a side-track: I thought any repetitions of 'make' should either recompile (if needed for the new _go_draw_axes_.m) , or do nothing. It compiled the first time, but now it stumbles of this non-existing directory. If I solve this (stupidity?) I will report on it.

Before recompiling, you may first check if it will indeed fix the problem.

Under octave prompt, find which _go_draw_axes_.m is used :
which _go_draw_axes_
patch this file
Remember to leave and start again octave as these m-files are cached.

For the compilation, are you starting from a fresh extract ?

Thanks for the suggestion! I've applied your patch, but now I run into a compile error, which I didn't have when I compiled the first time. So, I'll get to this, when the compiling works.

__

I'm not a compiling expert: if you have a tip how to resolve this, I'd be interested:

cd libcruft
make
(it compiles and then:)
libtool: link: g++ -shared -nostdlib /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.4.5/../../../../lib/crti.o /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.4.5/crtbeginS.o (......)

(..... and gives errors:)
g++: /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.4.5/../../../../lib/crti.o: No such file or directory
g++: /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.4.5/crtbeginS.o: No such file or directory
g++: /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.4.5/crtendS.o: No such file or directory
g++: /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.4.5/../../../../lib/crtn.o: No such file or directory
make: *** [libcruft.la] Error 1
______________________________________
which is correct, because /usr/lib/gcc does not have a 'x86_64-linux-gnu' subdir....

I can only think of that ubuntu has removed this directory in a software update. But: unlikely!

any suggestions here?

thanks

It works here with 3.4.0, but with this patch applied :
http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/7c60b2bd7f39
which solved a similar bug :
http://octave.1599824.n4.nabble.com/more-problems-with-labels-td3287293.html

Does it fix your problem also ?

overplotting f(x)=x works with gnuplot without labels:

but it doesn't work when you add a label ('text' here):

In FLTK this problem does not occur.
My version 3.4.0 is compiled from source on ubuntu 10.10 intel x86_64
