I've implemented an $(info ...) function for the next release of GNU make. It prints its arguments to stdout with no filename/linenumber prefix.

I concur.

I am the person who proposed the #error facility in standard C. A few weeks later, I realized that this should have been unbundled into separate #print and #exit directives, but the ANSI committee would not reconsider.

"Error" and "Warning" both exist, but both will put out text which match the emacs macros for an error. In particular they print out the filename and line number.

If one has a large project and (in a very un-unixlike way) wishes to provide "comfort noise" that things are progressing, e.g. printing out when a makefile has been read, then this extra information is not helpful.

This patch trivially adds a "message" command which just
writes to stdout, with no extra information added.

Of course this could be done with a ${shell echo all is well > /dev/tty} but this seems overkill, given that make already has almost everything it needs.
