Thanks for the patch and test. I verified it and applied it in this changeset (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/bedd0cdb3584). You can either download the latest source from the Mercurial archive or wait for the 3.4.1 release to access the fix. I expect the new point release in less than 2 weeks.

Could you provide a test case so that we can verify the existing behavior and that the patch fixes it?

Also, what version of gnuplot are you using as this often makes a difference.

When setting labels using the command line:
text(a, b, c, labels )
I receive a number of lines of output from gnuplot like:

And ( as the output makes clear ), gnuplot fails to display the text.

I have attached a patch against the mercurial repo with a fix ( changing the fprintf conversion specification in _go_draw_axes_.m from %g to %e.)
