You are misreading the man page: the -i / --input option takes the patch name as its argument, so either of these commands will have the same effect:

patch originalfile < patchfile
patch -i patchfile originalfile
patch originalfile patchfile

The mag page was last modified in May 2010 -- see the git repository for details.

Yes, i mean the manpage anybody touched since 2002/05/25...

manpage of patch says: "patch [options] [originalfile [patchfile]]"

but doing "patch -i /usr/bin/badfile badfile.patch"
results in output: "patch: **** Only garbage was found in the patch input."

BUT executing "patch -i badfile.patch /usr/bin/badfile"
results in output: "patching file /usr/bin/badfile".

To be clear: man pages say: "[options] [originalfile [patchfile]]", but actually "[options] [patchfile [originalfile]]" is meant!

If someone references me to the man pages now i will drive nuts, as well as if someone is trying to tell me the originalfile is the patchfile, and the patchfile is the originalfile from the man page ;)
