This fix has a problematic side-effect on this example:

octave> clear a
octave> a(1,1) = sparse(1)
error: can't resize to negative dimension

The following examples return the error 'A(I,J,...) = X: dimensions mismatch' in Octave:

clear a b;
a = speye(3);
b(:,1) = a(:,1);

clear a
a(1,:) = sparse(1,3,1,1,3)

while MATLAB returns sparse matrices.
