Since no new info is forthcoming here I'm closing this. Let me know if it should be reopened.

It could be that the manual is incorrect, but you have not shown it to be so. Checking Solaris 2.7 to see what might have been true in SunOS 4 is in no way definitive. SunOS 4 was a BSD-based system, while Solaris is a SysV-based system: their make programs could well have been very different.

If someone can definitely say that SunOS 4 make did not support -include, I'll update the manual (this predates my involvement with GNU make maintenance by a good bit).

To me this kind of error in attribution could be of concern only to someone determined to not like GNU make regardless of the facts: what difference does it make where it came from? The GNU make manual could just as easily left out that entire section: would they be happier then?

From make's info pages:

"The `-include' directive to include makefiles with no error for a nonexistent file comes from SunOS 4 `make'."

At least with SunOS 5.7, there appears to be no such thing as -include; all it gets me is:

make: Fatal error in reader: Makefile, line 2: Unexpected end of line seen

(Tested with both /usr/xpg4/bin/make and /usr/ccs/bin/make, whatever that means.)

Either I'm missing something here, or the documentation is wrong. I'm trying to defend GNU make to a fellow developer who hates it, but when I back up my arguments with "facts" that turn out to be incorrect, it doesn't reflect well on GNU.
