Sorry to have duplicated #30477.

But, the problem really seems to be fixed now.

So, it appears that both reports can be closed.

I checked in the following change:

http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/f359cfc6e24d

If this change fixes the problem for you, then I will close this report.

This problem was also reported previously here:

https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?30477

John,

This doe appear to help. I think (maybe optimistically)
that help is also quicker. There used to frequently be a
pause before any text appeared.

But, since this problem has "come and gone" there is a need
for more testing. I ran tests from the build (./run-octave).
I will install this system and use it more.

So far, I would say that this patch could be committed.

Does the attached patch help?

Sorry, now with the clear ans in the
.octaverc I just got a hang as result
of:
octave
help whos
================

So, behavior seems pretty random.

I just found the following fact:
My ~/.octaverc file currently contains:
backend("fltk");
===================
With this .octaverc a help command as the
first command hangs.
I changed this to:
backend("fltk");
clear ans
===================
and the help command no longer hangs.
Also, the hang seems to be only for help whos.
help strcmp and help logm did not hang.

The mystery continues. Can anyone reproduce this?

Michael

I sent the email below to the maintainer list on 7/28/2010, but
a similar hang happened to me using the current development system. This is a difficult problem to examine since it happens
randomly, and the exact sequence that triggers it seems to change.

In the text attached I was able to cause the failure while running under gdb. I hope this helps someone to
find the problem.

It would be a worry if the coming release goes out with this problem. When it happens all current work is lost since the
only recovery is to close the window, or kill -9 from another
window.
===================================

The original hang happened when I ssh'ed into another machine
and ran:
find('a')
find('a')
find('abca')
help find

>>hang here<< requires kill -9

===================================
This sequence produced the attached gdb output.

The most recent hang was triggered by
help strcmp

so, the string following the find seems not to be the
problem.
