During the initial "real mode" stage of the boot process gurb may be able take on the job of the BIOS and setup and initiate the relevant PXE ROM functions in the upper memory thus giving a standard PXE (UNDI) network driver the ability to implement DHCP, UDP, TFTP without actually implementing the driver of a specific NIC and the protocols above.
This will probably work slower then native driver implementation but it is supported on most PXE ROMs.
