It turns out that after setting

export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=y

plotting works again.

I suspect that what you are seeing with visible "off" is related to https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/index.php?31931

I wonder why I get this error even if visible is set to "off". Here is a little bit more of info:

===============================
Does the crash over ssh start with:
octave:5> GL2PS error: Bad file pointer ?

This is one indication of a known timing problem in the
fltk backend. However, in other cases there seem to be
other failures such as the PDF file ends up empty. It appears
to be the case that running locally works, at least most
of the time but any use of
connections which cause the writing of the figure to take too
long results in failures. Also, scripts with many calls
to plot() tend to fail at some point which is not
predictable. The known timing causes, AFAIK, are ssh
and use of NX (NX takes a relatively long time since it
copies the desktop to the remote machine).

Does your home laptop have the same graphics hardware as your office desktop? Are you using the same graphics card driver software for both? If not, then I would start by looking at those differences.

it segfaults from my home laptop, running X over ssh on Ubuntu Lucid.

The interesting thing is that it works when I do the same thing from my office desktop, running the same system. So the only obvious difference is the telephone line vs. ethernet.

I think you will need to provide some more info.

Precisely what do you mean by "remotely"? An ssh connection? Something else?

What kind of system is running your local display?

I think about all we can do in this case is detect that there is insufficient GL support and give an error. I would not expect that we can magically fix graphics if you don't have the proper hardware or software.

But, I don't know how to detect and catch this error so we can do something useful. Perhaps someone can point to some tips about how to handle it?

octave crashes when running plot command remotely with fltk backend.

Here is the corresponding valgrind output:
