I checked in the following change:

http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/8b2a47a99701

It seems to fix the problem for me so I'm closing this bug report.

Changeset 10445 was intended to warn of missing Matlab functions. This bug is an apparent unintended feature.

http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/62f8ae5ab2cc

The change does result in a warning for missing functions.

In Octave 3.3.53, if I try to retrieve the help of any non existent function foo as 'help foo', the interpreter do not emits any warning about the non existence. The interpreter only continues the execution as normal
