The patch works for me with both gnuplot 4.2.6 and 4.4.0

Please push it.

In the fltk backend I get both the image and the line so it works fine for with with the latest tip. I only see this issue in the gnuplot backend. Something like the attached fixes the issue for me..

Should I commit it?

Thanks for the explanation. I dont' recall if I tested the FLTK backend before. After fresh pull and build, FLTK renders the correct image for me. However, GL2PS does not. When I print, only see the hilbert image (no line).

No, we're in total agreement. I wrote it is "worse for me", not "works for me" and I had set the bug to confirmed. Using the FLTK backend, I only get the Hilbert image. Using gnuplot, I only get the line. I never get both overlaid as it should.

Using the gnuplot backend, the trick to set the axis color to none works. The same trick does not work for me with the FLTK backend.

Rik, I'm not sure I understand.

You say it works for you, but describe a non-working result.

The result should be a hilbert image with a line plotted across it.

For me, I see the line with square markers after I run ...

After adding ...

then I see the hilbert image with the line on top. I've attached plots for each.

It's worse for me. I only see the hilbert image. The plot which is supposed to be overlaid is always invisible. This is with the development sources and either backend.

I see this with Gnuplot 4.2.6 and 4.4.0, but not with FLTK.

The plot box color is rendered before image is rendered. So I don't know why the image isn't visible.

If no one comes up with a solution, we could simply avoid rendering the axes color when an image is present.

The 2nd demo for "hold" hides the image behind the patch used to fill the plot box with the axes' specified color.
