I corrected the remaining problem. There were actually several problems. First of all, the mac extensions completele fail to obtain correct image information, so I switched them off for the ps, eps and pdf extensions. Secondly, ghostscript does not correctly take into account non trivial offsets for the bounding box. Therefore, I now use imagemagick as a hacky replacement in the case of non trivial offsets.

Max: please clean up the dynamic library path hack when you have time; it is cleaner anyway if TeXmacs knows what formats are supported by Qt.

The fix works for my jpeg images. If you prefer to inhibit using too many external libraries, then I suggest that you put just the standard Qt image libraries you mentioned in the bundle, and modify init-images.scm in such a way that you pretend to support at least those Qt-supported formats (in addition to ps, eps and pdf). If the user of the bundle has additional conversion programs in his path, then TeXmacs will convert them in one of the standard formats using the mechanisms in init-images.scm.

By the way, the problem from texmacs-chip.tm is still not solved.
I attach the ps image which causes the problem.

As far as the problem with gif images (and jpeg) is concerned I've committed a partial solution. The point is that Qt uses external plugins to convert common formats. On my machine (macosx) there are the following plugins installed:

libqgif.dylib libqico.dylib libqjpeg.dylib libqmng.dylib libqsvg.dylib libqtiff.dylib

we need to provide a way to copy the plugins to the application bundle and at the same time take advantage of available plugins on the host machine. It is not very difficult but I have to implement this. For the moment (r4518) TeXmacs looks simply at the default locations for Qt.

I attached a new problematic file texmacs-chip.tm,
with an image which bothers me each that I have to
give a presentation with the Qt version of TeXmacs...

The newly added '#ifdef'-ed code in image_file.cpp
is incorrect in the case when the first corner
of the bounding box of the Postscript document is not the origin.
I attached a TeXmacs file which demonstrates the problem.
Moreover, the problem occurs in different ways depending
on whether we are under X11/Qt/Mac/Linux,
so there are at least two actual bugs in the code.

Another problem I experienced with the Qt version (contrary
to the X11 version) under MacOS is that gif images do not
always seem to work (second attached file).
