I neglected to read HACKING, which states that ./autogen.sh should be run first. That solved the problem. Please close this as invalid.

I ran "./bootstrap" in a fresh checkout of Octave, and it failed with this message (see the full log attached):

automake: cannot open < doc/interpreter/images.mk: No such file or directory

Apparently automake is following the "include" directive in Makefile.am, but the makefiles referred to are generated, so of course they do not yet exist. Makefile.in was not created, so I cannot build.

I'm using Octave revision 65c14c052fe3 with a checkout of gnulib revision 882da58ae6f34b4637240739ae37a1b5efd39cf6 manually placed at "gnulib/", on Fedora 13. Automake is automake-1.11.1-1.fc13.noarch.
