Use the FLTK toolkit for acceptable performance. The gnuplot backend will always be slow.

The attached demo runs quickly on MacOS using the FLTK backend.

Can this be closed?

I suspect the problem is that communicating with gnuplot via pipes is slow.

I'm not sure what we can do about that for gnuplot, since we have to communicate with it via pipes or files (and files have their own problems).

A lot of work is being done to improve graphics in Octave using OpenGL and FLTK, which will probably improve things for this kind of animation in the future.

I'll leave this report open for now in case someone knows of some magic to make communication with gnuplot faster on Windows systems.

I have written an octave version of Conway's game of life (see Wikipedia for more info on that), but it runs very slowly on the Windows version of Octave. On Linux, it is fine, also in MATLAB (which I don't have at home), so I suspect the reason is to do with wgnuplot.

I have attached the program, if its of any use.
