I too had some trouble in the beginning but after I found the CVSMake everything was fine.

I have the same automake as you.

try a clean new directory and just run:
./CVSMake
./configure
make

If it dosen't work then I don't know if I can help you.

I'm still rather new to autotools, so I haven't yet figured out why all four Makefile.in's aren't being generated. (themes,ddd,vsllib,./)

However, as a workaround I copied the Makefile.in's from the last ddd release tarball and this lets me move ahead to compilation. Not ideal, but a functional hack.

With a fresh working copy, I tried running configure directly and got a lot of confusing errors and learned a lot about automake, etc :-)

Finally I stumbled on CVSMake which ran for a while, but now configure fails with "config.status: error: cannot find input file Makefile.in"

Can anyone suggest a fix?

Ubuntu 10.04 adm64 with automake 1-11.1

Thanks
