PSPP should complain if one tries to use a width bigger than 40 on the F format, but instead it crashes. The above syntax does the job:

DATA LIST LIST /x.
BEGIN DATA.
1
2
3
END DATA.
SET FORMAT F41.
DESCRIPTIVES /x.
