Octave doesn't supply the fonts, these are supplied by the packager of Octave for the distribution you are using.. Note that the TeX interpreter in Octave is just a light layer over gnuplot and the symbols that can be interpreted are those given by gnuplot itself. Thus I don't think we can include \odot till gnuplot itself does. See

http://ariadne.mse.uiuc.edu/Info/Gnuplot/ps_guide.pdf

That being said. If the computer modern font has the \odot symbol then you can include any symbol in the font by addressing the character directly by its code. Sorry I don't know the code of the odot character but if its 222 for example, then somthing like

{/Computer-Modern \222}

or perhaps

{/ComputerModern \222}

will display the odot character

As nothing can be done in Octave itself till gnuplot implements the odot character, Octave doesn't control the installation of the fonts and if the Computer Modern font is installed for use with Octave there is a work around, I'm closing this feature request.

Sorry not to be more help, but if its any consolation, note that matlab can't display the odot character either

Currently print.m, and _go_draw_axis_.m use gnuplot's internal Symbol font for special symbol handling. The Symbol font lacks the sun symbol, and probably many others as well.

One way to implement these missing symbols is to preload the computer modern fonts(cmex, cmsy, and etc) on a postscript terminal with 'fontfile add' option. And in _setup_sym_table_, translate the latex codes into the corresponding computer modern encodings. It would be the best if octave also distribute these fonts together - if they are free to redistribute.

The tex interpreter lacks the sun symbol (\odot), which makes the plotting in astronomy very cumbersome. Would you please implement the symbol?
