gnustep-make removes obsolete variables and features from the default setup only 5 years after deprecating them, so we'll have to wait another couple of years before removing them. By then, we'll be really sure that all makefiles have been updated to gnustep-make 2.0 :-)

No big deal though, it doesn't harm anyone to have four or five additional variables defined in the environment. ;-)

Thanks

In base I use a rule of a complete release cycle (excluding bugfix releases).

ie if something is deprecated in one release, it has to continue to exist until the next release. Since we actually tend to do non-bugfix releases about once a year, that's on average an 18 month process from the point of deciding to deprecate something ...

a. decide to deprecate
b. 6 months later the release in which the feature is formally deprecated is made
c. a year after that the release in which the feature is removed is made.

So even if you don't track svn or bugfix releases, you still get at full release cycle (about a year) in which to deal with any changes.

We generally wait 5 years. The variables don't actually cause any harm - the 'GNUSTEP' prefix makes sure they don't interfere with anything.

So I guess I'd wait another couple of years. ;-)

Surely after well over three years since they were deprecated, it's about time that the generation of old environment variables such as GNUSTEP_SYSTEM_ROOT was retired.

I'd replace the current --enable-strict-v2-mode configuration option with something like a --enable-partial-pre-v2-support option (with the opposite sense to the current option of course).
