If you need help building Octave, then use the -unavailable- mailing list.

If you have a problem with the way Octave was packaged for Ubuntu, then file a bug report with whoever is packaging Octave for Ubuntu.

I'm closing this bug report.

ans = -lreadline

this is what i get on putting the following in the command prompt

octave_config_info ("LIBREADLINE")

Although i have been using Ubuntu for quite some time i don't know whether command line editing and history functions work in my copy of Octave. How do i check?

Nothing happens when i press Control P.

Please start me off on how to reconfigure and recompile to include readline.

Thank you

In the copy of Octave that you have installed, what does the following command print?

octave_config_info ("LIBREADLINE")

Do command-line editing and history functions work in your copy of Octave? For example, does Control-P move backward through the history list?

If Octave was not configured to use readline, or readline was not present when Octave was compiled, you must reconfigure and recompile it to enable readline.

When i installed Ubuntu 10.04 it installed Octave 3.2.3 by itself. I had to later remove the package for 3.0 as neither would load due to the presence of the other.

Now, if i want to have that functionality, is it possible for me to add the readline function?

It works correctly for me using the Debian package for Octave 3.2.4. I expect that it would also work in 3.2.3. Did you build Octave from sources yourself or install it from the Ubuntu package? Does it include support for readline command editing and history? If not, then clc won't work because it is implemented using the readline function rl_clear_screen.

I'm using Octave 3.2.3 on Ubuntu 10.04. Previously i was using Octave 3.0 on Ubuntu 9.10. I was used to the function 'clc' which would clear the terminal screen. It is common to both matlab and was easy to use in Octave. However, with the new version of Octave, this function is not working. I have tried using it as part of a .m file as well as directly typing it into the terminal command line. In both cases, the command is not working. There is just no response.
